This User’s manual explains one by one all the available functionalities, from the Osmius control panel to the overall system monitoring concepts. It also explains the specific concepts used by Osmius, in order to build a monitoring system with the intrinsic complexity on such systems in a comprehensive and therefore easy to manage way.
In addition, it shows the Osmius architecture and the elements on what it is based to achieve the creation of Monitoring systems capable of adapting to our existing systems and, maybe further more important, to the services these systems provide. Monitoring the systems, whether these systems refer to network elements such as switches and routers, or servers running the different OS from Unix to Windows, applications like Mail managers, our own websites, CRM or ERPs, as well as the temperature of our DPCs and other different abstractions like our stock market values or the competitor’s, no one doubts of their importance. To be aware of the existing problems and where they are located, and to be able to solve them in advance, even before the users for whom the Information Systems are designed, suffer the consequences of these problems, is mandatory. The system monitoring activities must be in alignment with the company goals and the business processes, and not only provide with excessive technical information. E.g.: Port 22 from Router 31 is down, but I need to know if this affects the Sales Portal or not.
Osmius is a monitoring product focused on this type of problems. From the first moment, Osmius has been designed focusing on the technique, speed and performance, but also in binding the provided information with the business targets and the system services, supplying different approaches for a single problem: from the technical users to the company chairman. Besides, Osmius endures a truly multiplatform environment so it is technology free, whether this technology is proprietary or not. The Osmius code can be downloaded, modified and enhanced, offering both users and companies the freedom to choose based on quality and satisfaction.
We will deal with the main concepts handled in the element monitoring activities and the terms used by Osmius. This way, we will get used to the main ideas and we will be able to understand and manage our installation faster.
Osmius has been designed based on the simplicity of management, comprehension and installation.
In order to achieve flexibility and adjustment to multiple environments, Osmius develops an architecture based on agents. These agents are those that monitor the environment and send back the events that we can consult and manage in a centralized way. .
This chapter explains the main elements of this architecture and the way these elements help us to manage in a centralized and straightforward way those simple installations with just a few elements and instances, and those more complex ones with hundreds of instances and related services.
Functionalities to receive and manage all the events coming from all the systems that are being monitored: Supervise the emergence of the new events of monitored instances or elements, control the status of the services which are associated to such instances, test the accomplishment of the Service Level Agreements or SLA, start actions to solve problems and incidences, plan and manage the capacity of the hardware and software resources, finalize and identify the events that have caused the alerts, etc.
Customizable screen where the user can define his/her own views using widget controls.
Map Viewer where you can manage the georeferentiation of Services and Instances of Osmius installation.
Functionalities to manage the Instances, Services, Service Level Agreements, Data Warehouse, etc.
Functionalities to manage and supervise the infrastructure that maintains the Osmius monitoring process: Agents, Master Agents, Tasks, Servers, etc.
Functionalities to obtain information about SLA, Services, Instances or Events with the possibility of obtaining printable reports, etc.
Functionalities to manage the subscriptions of the different notifications (Change of availability and critical status of Services or Instances, etc) and how to implement them (Mail, SMS, etc)
Functionalities to manage and supervise the security for users, profiles and clients, as well as the Osmius installation Register the Osmius Installation which enables a complete assessment from the development team and the Osmius support.
